canyoublockit.com vs. AdGuardHome v0.104.3

Expected Behavior

Block ads and pass ad-blocking tests.

Actual Behavior

Generally blocks ads, but does not perform well against canyoublockit.com and other ad-blocking test sites.

Additional Information

AdGuardHome + AdGuard Chrome Browser extension seems to pass the canyoublockit.com test. But AdGuardHome on its own does not.

This depends heavily on the blocklists you use. I tried your canyoublockit.com link and on both basic and extreme test I don't see advertisements. AdBlockHome + uBlock Origin

On second test "eXtreme Test" for DNS based AdBlockers like AGH it works fine for me.

No ads and banners, I use AGH SDNS, Adaway, Spam404 and NoCoin list.

@bbartlomiej I couldn't find a ublock origin list. It looks like a similar utility to AdGuardHome. Is there a ublock origin list somewhere that I'm missing?

@uservictor I appear to be using the same lists except for SDNS.

SDNS is the default AGH DNS list, on the "first" test like your picture i see the same pictures.
The other test doesnt show any ad.

You can see ads that are not in the list you use, this has nothing to do with AGH, as its function is "just" to check if an requested url is on the blacklist that you use or not.
If there is an match it will be blocked.

I think I read about blocking Google DNS at the firewall level to stop those ads too.

One thing I should have mentioned earlier was that I can reproduce the desired state when I ALSO activate the AdGuard AdBlocker Chrome browser extension. I reviewed the lists the extension used to block the canyoublockit images (those images are the ads, btw--many other forum posts here seem to not understand that), but I couldn't find any difference between the lists the extension used and the lists AdGuardHome uses. Ideally, I'd like my network to enjoy the same level of ad blocking that the chrome extension provides.

@bbartlomiej I added all of the lists that you had that I didn't have. I still see the ads on canyoublockit.com. When I activate the AdGuard Google Chrome browser plug in, with fewer/overlapping lists, it blocks those ads. I'm just after parity between the plugin and the AdGuardHome DNS filter.

Unfortunately, DNS-level blocking is kinda limited compared to what full-scale content blockers can do - it can't block ads loaded from the same domain and there's no cosmetic filtering.

If you still see ads you must add the domains to your lists. It is not possible to filter ads server from the same domain as the genuine content.

I thought he was implying his block lists were what led to the successful blocking of those advertisements.

I'm not trying to credit myself, but I do want to mark a solution for this thread with a summary:

@ameshkov clarified the expectation that even though the Google Chrome AdGuard plugin shares some lists with the AdGuardHome DNS service, there is no parity between the two. To pass the canyoublockit tests, you'll also need the plugin.

@bbartlomiej shared a lot of other cool lists, but they, in themselves, will not pass the canyoublockit tests. Granted, canyoublockit is just one of many arbitrary adblock testers and your mileage may vary based on what lists and supplemental adblocking utilities are used.
