It's a PC emulator that can run MS-DOS programs. DOSBox-X is similar to DOSBox that is in the Debian Bullseye for Raspberry Pi distribution, but it's actively maintained and has more features than DOSBox. DOSBox-X is available for Windows using Chocolatey and macOS using MacPorts. If you use DOSBox-X on other plattforms it is easier to use it also on Raspberry Pi, rather than to use DOSBox. DOSBox-X can be installed as in the article https://magpi.raspberrypi.com/articles/run-windows-98-on-raspberry-pi-with-dosbox-x , but it's probably better to use the downloaded latest released version instead of the cloned GitHub version since the released version is probably more tested. DOSBox-X only seems to ship compiled for Windows and not Linux AFAIK.
