I don't know why or what, but if it helps I'm on arch. My .hyper.js is as such

It appears at the bottom of my Hyper with the Spotify icons but no song name or anything else

Yeah it doesn't work on Linux because the project uses andrehaveman/spotify-node-applescript to access spotify which does not support Linux. It would have been helpful for the creators to specify this in the Readme.
