According to the minecraftwiki, the leveling scale for each level should start at 17 exp per level, and then increase around level 16. However, ModDamage uses a 100-exp-per-level system and it looks like it had to use a fairly complicated workaround to do so, if my reading of playerProps.java is correct.
I'm using an aliased Essentials command to get and set levels and experience for now. Essentials' method also successfully updates the level count and experience bar when a level is increased by adding experience.
