Freeze when typing unfinished markdown comments

When I open a markdown comment while editing a file using the GitHub Markdown grammar, and starting adding text to it, Atom gradually gets slower and then freezes within a few seconds.

If I set ATOM_HOME to a different location to effectively reset Atom, install atom-wordcount, and try to reproduce the issue, nothing bad happens. This suggests that my settings or some other package is interacting with atom-wordcount and freezing Atom. I'll try to post some of my settings here:
