simply extracting the tarball does not install the systemd service. extract the entire build to a directory (like /opt/OpenTabletDriver or a ~/.local directory) and run otd-daemon to start the actual driver.

otd-gui is the interface, which you can use to customize your settings. You can now from this point tell your desktop environment to launch these scripts when it starts or you can install the systemd user unit (you will have to search up how to install user units locally, same with the .desktop file)

I also insist from this point onwards you read the FAQ, as the tarball doesn't automatically do the required removal of the kernel drivers or setting up udev rules.

Nevermind, turns out you can just extract it from / and it'll sort itself out.

Here's what I was doing wrong: interestingly, the extracting happens in ~/Downloads, not in /! Need to instruct the tar command to extract this in /.
