Notification bar playback controls bug

Overview

In the android version of this app I've found that the control console (play/pause, skip forward/back) located in the notification bar only works sometimes. Other times using the buttons located there causes the control console to crash, requiring the app to be restarted.

How to reproduce

1 open the app
2 leave app running in the background for undetermined period of time
3 use notification bar playback controls to play previously paused content
4 notification bar controls crash
