Dynamically set the autocomplete value

Is there a more dynamic approach to properly set the value of the auto complete elements using a method? Maybe I'm looking in the wrong spots, but I can't find any documentation on it. Whenever I manually change the value of either the input field or the select element, the other element does not correspond. I have to manually update both the hidden select element AND the input field. I would have assumed the input field was looking for changes in the select element or something to that nature.
