especially the Gradle build scripts

too complex and error-prone; the scripts need to be more straightforward

Closing as we have been refactoring the build scripts, especially in the latest release.

There is always room for improvement, but I dont think we need to keep the ticket open forever since the task of refactoring will never be over.
