Repeat not 100% working

Repeat (.) seems to work for me sometimes, e.g. yyp. pastes the line twice, but cw<esc>hi. doesn't replace the next two words with hi (it replaces them with hii, inserting the last letter always even for strings longer than "hi").

It seems like anything that changes or inserts text has this issue (c/C/s/S/i/I/a...).

I was able to reproduce using this example.
