I can't write in google docs because it just takes over. I have to fully disable it.

I'm not experiencing this, try playing around with these settings:

• settings.stealFocusOnLoad
• settings.editableBodyCare

Also, how are you trying to access the edit box?
On Google Docs, using f doesn't show a hint for going there, so try i to go to the edit box, or w to switch frames into the edit box.
