Here are some things to consider in the design space:

how does ecash work
How can you run a mining pool within a carol federation: https://www.discreetlog.com/fedipool/
How can you minimize the functionality of the machine so that it doesn't need to be changed
How could you batch peg-outs and peg-ins? Allow anyone to add inputs/outputs to the transactions generated by the machine.
How does lightning work.
How can this all be designed without requiring SPK -> TxOut index or even transaction index.
