React, react-chart-js-2, and webpack - time scale issues

I, for the life of me, can't figure out why chartjs-adapter-moment is not working with my time scale. I punted this a few months back, but it looks like I'll be using a lot of data that's going to make it difficult to avoid at this point.

Here's my error:

Anyone ever encounter this? I tried luxon, date-fns, all the same story. Incredibly frustrated right now.

To resolve this, I provide the following steps:

1. Ensure that you have installed both chart.js and chartjs-adapter-moment packages in your project. You can install them using npm or yarn by running the following command:

   npm install chart.js chartjs-adapter-moment

   or

   yarn add chart.js chartjs-adapter-moment

2. Import the necessary dependencies in your code. In your example, it seems like you're using React and react-chartjs-2. Make sure to import chart.js and chartjs-adapter-moment along with other required modules:

   import Chart from 'chart.js';
   import 'chartjs-adapter-moment';

3. Register the date adapter before creating the chart. You can use the Chart.register method to register the moment adapter. Make sure to do this before rendering the chart:

   Chart.register(Chart.momentAdapter);

4. Verify that you have provided the correct options for your time scale. The configuration should look something like this:

   scales: {
     x: {
       type: 'time',
       time: {
         unit: 'day', // or any other time unit you need
       },
     },
   },

   Adjust the unit according to your requirements. You can refer to the Chart.js documentation for more details on available options.

If the above steps don't resolve the issue, make sure that your project has compatible versions of Chart.js, chartjs-adapter-moment, and any other related dependencies.

It's also worth mentioning that some older versions of the chartjs-adapter-moment library may have compatibility issues. So, if you're using an older version, consider updating to the latest version.

We had the same problem which we were able to solve by setting the following alias inside webpack.config.js:

        'chartjs-adapter-date-fns': path.resolve(
          __dirname,

          'chartjs-adapter-date-fns.esm.js'
        )
    }
}

The problem was that in our code Webpack imported the commonjs distribution of chart.js (file chart.cjs) while the date-adapter imported the ESM distribution (file chart.js) and applied the adapter there.

I ran into this myself... I wish they would fix this so that frameworks that import the adapter in node won't keep running into this problem. Perhaps both the cjs and the js can reference the same class. After failing to resolve this the webpack config route in my ember app, I opted for the following temporary solution as a postinstall script.

Add the following to the main app's package.json in "scripts":

"postinstall": "bash chart.adapterHack.sh"

Create chart.adapterHack.sh with the following contents

After npm install or npm ci, the script will run and patch the issue.
