useApplicationContext returns empty object after migration

After migrating our custom application to v 21 useApplicationContext now returns an empty object. Have not seen this touched on in any documentation and can't seem to find a way to get the project settings, user info, and custom settings into the custom application now.

I found the reason for the inconsistency to be that there was a mismatch between the package used by the page and the package used by application shell because of them being separated and packaged with their individual package.json. Setting up aliases for the packages helped.
