Category order hints for products in subcategory

Hi, I'm developing a custom app that will enable to set the category order hints. On the fronted the products are fetched by the product projection search to match category or subcategories. I can set the order hint of a category, but when I try to set the order hint for a parent category I can't do it as it is not specifically set to the parent category. For example:

Cat A -> Cat B

I have a product in Cat B. The front is fetching products for CatA and it's subcategories. To set the order I can use CatA as source for the order hint in the query. But as the product is not directly set in CatA, I'm getting an error for Cannot set the order hint for the category because the product is not in that category.

Is there a way I can set the order of products so it will be respected with the subcategories as well?
