Bug reproduction: either navigate to https://hkn.eecs.berkeley.edu/indrel/events?sort=companies.name&sort_direction=up, or navigate to https://hkn.eecs.berkeley.edu/indrel/events, and sort by 'Company'.

Reported on rollbar as error 71; error occurs around indrel_events_controller.rb, line 25.

Looks like the opts.merge! no longer supports joins: as a parameter?
