Back in v1.7.9, this repository gained a patch (since trimmed and renamed 1.8.5.2-cygwin.patch) to disable some Cygwin-specific behaviour for Git-GUI. That patch has existed ever since and should presumably just be merged upstream at this point.

In ancient times (pre-2012 or so), the Tcl shipped with Cygwin wasn't actually a Cygwin application, but a Win32 one.

I guess the mangling of filenames into windows form using cygpath is a relic from that bygone age, and indeed, should be allowed fade into history.
