Fore me (and i think for some other users of this plugin) it's important to leave standard paste functionality as it is. Here i just disabled it in the source code.
But it's not hard to add this as an option. It's really useful option.

I'd also like to be able to paste like normal by default and assign a new hotkey to the "Paste URL into selection" hotkey instead. I keep pasting as a URL when I'm trying to paste over something more times that I'd like.

It looks like a similar issue #22 already exists.

For now you can use my fork https://github.com/BumbrT/obsidian-url-into-selection through BRAT plugin. Only one line difference with this repo: disabled editor paste handling.
