I ve countered the same problem for a long while and today when i tried to fix this problem i found a way and the final effect looks like this:
xxx

ttt

i did it in the following steps:

  1. delete current hidden bar and install 1.8 version
  2. active Show preference on launch and make sure u can see both | and < on ur menu bar
  3. delete 1.8 version and reinstall 1.9. after this step u should be able to find | and < on ur menu bar(same as 1.8)
  4. adjust the order of |(gray) |(dark) and < as it shows.
  5. close preference window and enjoy.

Tho the Always hidden section doesn't work properly, the < works at least;)

@nigolarer I stopped the v1.9 process and removed the app and all associated files with App Cleaner. Then I installed v1.8 and toggled all the options but the icons still don't show up in the menubar.
