How to view encoded values

This may be an issue against the documentation.
In the shell example the BER encoding of the ASN.1 is not printed to stdout or saved in a file. The convert command expects the user to know the value, e.g., 300e0201011609497320312b313d333f.
But there is no documentation that describes how to get the value.
