By using gifsicle to optimize animations produced with this gifencoder I achieved file sizes that were almost 100x smaller, which suggests that there could be improvements on the optimization front.

Sure, gifencoder doesn't implement any inter-frame optimization like delta encoding.
This is very obvious in cases where frame-to-frame changes in pixel data are minimal. I assume yours is one of those cases.

Anybody willing to contribute an optimizer?
