Upon following internal cross-references the browser URL is updated correctly, but the back button does not take you back to where you were when you clicked on a link, but rather to the previous page.

Description

Here is an example where I clicked on a heading in the toolbar on the right:

Screenshot_20240509_165018

which, upon pressing the back button, becomes

Screenshot_20240509_165115

I'm using myst 1.2.1, and I have tried with both Firefox (version 126.0) and Chromium (version 123.0.6312.86).

Proposed solution

I think the back button should take the user back to where they were when they clicked on a link, regardless of whether it refers to the same page or to another one.

EDIT: you can test it here: https://lorenzo-rovigatti.github.io/comp_bio_notes/
