Summary

My application is dependent on having the correct class types for objects and not just the correct object structure. So I needed a way to in my tests ensure that that an object is actually equal to another, not just that they include the same data as this does not mean they are semantically equal.

Added test cases for passing and failing.

@SimenB Yeah it does but it would break sooo many things. I already spoke to @cpojer about this actually and he was the one to suggest the name strictEquals.

Yep, as @emilsjolander says this should be the default but it would thrash too many people and would be impossible to roll out at FB. Having a separate strict matcher in Jest is the better option.

Since we're making a new strict matcher, could we have it behave correctly for undefined (#711) as well?

And maybe add a flag to make toEqual be strict, so people can avoid having to specify strict? (that's a separate issue, though)

Could you point me to how I should write the changelog entry? The contribution docs don't really mention the format or what version to specify.

Just take a look at the current changelog. Something like "[expect] Introduce toStrictEqual (#6032)" under "features" should be enough.

A PR to the contributing guide mentioning changelog entries would be awesome as well 🙂

@SimenB How about we look at introducing a flag to toEqual() at a later point which would then make it equivalent to toStrictEqual()? That way this PR is fully backwards compatible
