Unable to set focus to flatpickr element if altInput is enabled

I've tried to use flatpickr, but have run into a problem. If the altInput is set to true, then the flatpickr element will not receive focus using document.getElementById( 'theId' ).focus();

Has anyone else encountered this and is there a workaround?
