<motion.img> animation incorrect only when using remote image on a deployed site

I use <motion.img layoutId=...> to animate the motion of images in my webapp. This is what the animation looks like when it is correct:

Some images are served from the same domain as the app and some images are remote. If an image is remote and I am using the production version of the app, then the animation is screwed up:

Note that the animation works fine in local dev, even when using the same remotely sourced images. The animation for images sourced from the same domain also works fine in production.

What could be causing this?
