So the battery is not charging now? I guess we're in a catch-22 where the battery needs an update to charge but the system won't allow the battery to be updated as the system power is low. IIRC we do have some handling for that, but none of the "UEFI Device Firmware" devices are category battery. What's the LVFS update that you're trying to apply? We should have "absorbed" some of the metadata flags from the LVFS so we identify it as a battery. |

Yup, the battery is constantly at 0, charged with both thunderbolt and USB C port and no dice.
Yup, that's the issue. In the case I linked he was able to upgrade the battery firmware which didn't require battery to be charged, but for me the battery isn't being detected by fwupd. Here's output of sudo fwupdmgr get-updates, I don't know which update it actually stops on. Thanks for the quick reply, I'm going to gone for a couple of hours now. sudo fwupdmgr get-updates --verbose```(fwupdmgr:11339): GLib-DEBUG: 17:51:46.291: setenv()/putenv() are not thread-safe and should not be used after threads are created (fwupdmgr:11339): GLib-GIO-DEBUG: 17:51:46.293: _g_io_module_get_default: Found default implementation dconf (DConfSettingsBackend) for ‘gsettings-backend’ (fwupdmgr:11339): dconf-DEBUG: 17:51:46.293: watch_fast: "/system/proxy/" (establishing: 0, active: 0) (fwupdmgr:11339): dconf-DEBUG: 17:51:46.293: watch_fast: "/system/proxy/http/" (establishing: 0, active: 0) (fwupdmgr:11339): dconf-DEBUG: 17:51:46.294: watch_fast: "/system/proxy/https/" (establishing: 0, active: 0) (fwupdmgr:11339): dconf-DEBUG: 17:51:46.294: watch_fast: "/system/proxy/ftp/" (establishing: 0, active: 0) (fwupdmgr:11339): dconf-DEBUG: 17:51:46.294: watch_fast: "/system/proxy/socks/" (establishing: 0, active: 0) (fwupdmgr:11339): GLib-GIO-DEBUG: 17:51:46.294: _g_io_module_get_default: Found default implementation gnome (GProxyResolverGnome) for ‘gio-proxy-resolver’ (fwupdmgr:11339): dconf-DEBUG: 17:51:46.297: watch_established: "/system/proxy/" (establishing: 1) (fwupdmgr:11339): dconf-DEBUG: 17:51:46.297: watch_established: "/system/proxy/http/" (establishing: 1) (fwupdmgr:11339): dconf-DEBUG: 17:51:46.297: watch_established: "/system/proxy/https/" (establishing: 1) (fwupdmgr:11339): dconf-DEBUG: 17:51:46.297: watch_established: "/system/proxy/ftp/" (establishing: 1) (fwupdmgr:11339): dconf-DEBUG: 17:51:46.297: watch_established: "/system/proxy/socks/" (establishing: 1) (fwupdmgr:11339): Fwupd-DEBUG: 17:51:46.300: Emitting ::status-changed() [idle] (fwupdmgr:11339): FuMain-DEBUG: 17:51:46.309: skipping metadata check (fwupdmgr:11339): FuMain-DEBUG: 17:51:46.330: current version is 10.01.3478575: 10.01.3478575=same, 10.01.3158804=older (fwupdmgr:11339): FuMain-DEBUG: 17:51:46.335: No releases found: Device only supports version upgrades (fwupdmgr:11339): FuMain-DEBUG: 17:51:46.355: current version is 23.00: 23.00=same (fwupdmgr:11339): FuMain-DEBUG: 17:51:46.355: skipping unreported check (fwupdmgr:11339): FuMain-DEBUG: 17:51:46.355: FwupdDevice: DeviceId: 2292ae5236790b47884e37cf162dcf23bfcd1c60 Name: Embedded Controller Guid: 38ea6335-29ca-417b-8cd4-6b4e5e866f92 Summary: UEFI ESRT device Plugin: uefi_capsule Protocol: org.uefi.capsule Flags: internal|updatable|require-ac|supported|registered|needs-reboot|usable-during-update Vendor: Lenovo VendorId: DMI:LENOVO Version: 0 VersionFormat: triplet Icon: audio-card Created: 2024-01-12 UpdateState: failed-transient(fwupdmgr:11339): FuMain-DEBUG: 17:51:46.355: ThinkPad FT490:

Okay, so the T490 battery doesn't actually have a public update on the LVFS -- which is why we're not upgrading one of those unknown devices to a battery and applying the special rules. @mrhpearson do you happen to know why https://fwupd.org/lvfs/firmware/16435/target was demoted from stable? |

I don't know - there were those cases on a few platforms where battery updates were bricking batteries so a bunch of updates got pulled, wonder if this got caught up in that? Battery updates should apply on no charge, as I recall. I thought we got that fixed in LVFS (though the FW team needed to add a battery category I think? It's somewhere in my notes...) I've raised internal ticket LO-2831 to the FW team to understand what happened to that FW update and when it will be back |

Apparently it was due to an abundance of caution as they had seen a few battery FW updates on Windows. They've moved it to the 'testing' target now. |

Hello,
Bought a T490 and the battery doesn't work. The system detects it in /sys/class/power_supply/BAT0, I can get the model name and manufacturer etc. from there and the system is seemingly trying charge it as
/sys/class/power_supply/BAT0/voltage_now
is3244000
.But when I do
sudo fwupdmgr get-devices --verbose
, the battery is not listed at all. The battery is not listed by the lenovo diagnostics tool thats accessible from boot either.fwupdmgr
does try to update firmware after isudo systemctl stop upower
, but once it actually tries to update the firmware with a restart, it gets interrupted because it isnt detecting any charge. So I guess it has to have some knowledge of the battery existence if it knows it has no charge during the update?I have already ordered a new battery, and currently Im contemplating making a Windows boot stick to try and see if I can make something happen. Maybe I might be able to upgrade the battery firmware there, this issue is giving me hope. He was able to upgrade his firmware with fwup since the battery was detected, maybe windows might be able to detect my battery.
My BIOS version is
1.51
, and I made a boot stick to upgrade to1.81
but I chickened out trying to upgrade because it said that battery needs to be charged.Does anyone have any knowledge how I might be able to get my battery to be detected to be able to see if it is a firmware issue?
