I spent a while trying to track down a bug that was already fixed on focal (#56) but not the bionic branch. It's not clear to me which changes should be applied to one or multiple branches.

It would be great to choose a Docker image as a parameter, so we could keep a single branch for all distros. We didn't find a way to do it originally, there's some discussion in #16.
