The Gradle Kotlin DSL script editor in IDEA reports missing JDK types when the Project SDK is different than the Gradle JVM in the IDE configuration. This started with Gradle 5.4, it was working before.

For example is your Gradle JVM is set to JDK 11, and your Project SDK is set to JDK 8 you get:

image

Setting the Project SDK to the same JDK as Gradle JVM makes the Gradle Kotlin DSL script editor happy.

Gradle JVM
can be found at Preferences > Build, Execution, Deployment > Build Tools > Gradle > Gradle JVM

Project SDK
can be found at Project Structure > Project Settings > Project > Project SDK

Expected Behavior

The Gradle Kotlin DSL script editor should find the JDK classes.
IOW, it should use the Gradle JVM.

Current Behavior

The Gradle Kotlin DSL script editor can't find the JDK classes when the Project SDK is different than the Gradle JVM.

Context

This behavior started with Gradle 5.4 because of this change gradle/kotlin-dsl-samples#1354 which makes the script dependencies resolver relay the javaHome given by the Kotlin IDEA Plugin. It turns out the Kotlin IDEA Plugin is wrongly passing the Project SDK instead of the Gradle JVM.

This happens with the latest Kotlin IDEA Plugin 1.3.30, also tried the previous 1.3.21.

Here's an upstream issue about fixing IDEA / the Kotlin IDEA Plugin to use the Gradle JVM for the Gradle Kotlin DSL script editor environment: https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issue/KT-31152. Until it is fixed, the general use case to use a different JVM in Gradle JVM and Project SDK is broken with Gradle 5.4: you can't edit Gradle Kotlin DSL scripts.

* feat: REGAPIC initial implementation (#824)

This includes:
1) Proper GRPC transcoding
2) Mimimal REST Operations (go make it compilable)
3) Rely on resource names for tests values generation (to not fail http url path validation)
4) Empty Server Streaming method implementation

* feat: REGAPIC Multitransport implementation (grpc+rest) (#833)

1) Fully backward compatible with grpc-only GAPIC
2) Strictly speaking not fully backward compatible with rest-only REGAPIC (but is compatible for practical cases). See below for details.
3) Introduces the concept of default transport (is necessary to preserve backward-compabitility). The default behavior assumes grpc transport.

- Create a helper rule (`select_file`) for selecting a file from outputs of another rule ([#233](https://togithub.com/bazelbuild/bazel-skylib/issues/233))

**Significant Changes**

- Move Gazelle extension to //gazelle/bzl and change package name
- Stop depending on rules_pkg through the federation. ([#259](https://togithub.com/bazelbuild/bazel-skylib/issues/259))

**Incompatible Changes**

- Remove links to maprules ([#213](https://togithub.com/bazelbuild/bazel-skylib/issues/213))
-   Remove old_sets.bzl ([#231](https://togithub.com/bazelbuild/bazel-skylib/issues/231))
    It has been deprecated for a while, the code is not really compatible with Bazel depset-related changes.

* feat: REGAPIC initial implementation (#824)

This includes:
1) Proper GRPC transcoding
2) Mimimal REST Operations (go make it compilable)
3) Rely on resource names for tests values generation (to not fail http url path validation)
4) Empty Server Streaming method implementation

* feat: REGAPIC Multitransport implementation (grpc+rest) (#833)

Needed to unblock DIREGAPIC LRO. To be reviewed after submission

* Portable String <--> bytes conversion (#841)

* Fix development doc (#837)

* Remove warnings for test code (#842)

* Remove extraneous call (#844)

8.0.2

The Gradle team is excited to announce Gradle 8.0.2.

This is the second patch release for Gradle 8.0. We recommend using
8.0.2 instead of 8.0.

It fixes the following issues:

- [#23698](https://togithub.com/gradle/gradle/issues/23698)
Gradle 8 RC2 runs out of metaspace
- [#23962](https://togithub.com/gradle/gradle/issues/23962)
Java/Scala build with no explicit toolchain: build fails with Gradle
8.0.1 / Scala 2.13
- [#23990](https://togithub.com/gradle/gradle/issues/23990)
Gradle 8.0.+ silently dropped support for custom compilers in
`JavaCompile`
- [#24031](https://togithub.com/gradle/gradle/issues/24031)
InstrumentingTransformer generates different class files in Gradle 8 and
7.6 which leads to Remote Build-Cache misses
- [#24109](https://togithub.com/gradle/gradle/issues/24109)
Extending an already resolved configuration no longer works correctly
- [#24122](https://togithub.com/gradle/gradle/issues/24122)
Update configuration cache state for some plugins
- [#24129](https://togithub.com/gradle/gradle/issues/24129)
includeBuild in PluginManagementSpec deincubated in Gradle 8, docs still
say it's incubating

Issues fixed in the first patch release:

- [#21551](https://togithub.com/gradle/gradle/issues/21551)
Document integration of Scala plugin with toolchains and problems with
`target` flag
- [#23888](https://togithub.com/gradle/gradle/issues/23888)
`--no-rebuild` suddenly gone without new deprecation cycle and without
the reason for its undeprecation being void
- [#23905](https://togithub.com/gradle/gradle/issues/23905)
Gradle 8.0 fails Scala build with isBlank not found in String class
error

### [`v5.5.1`](https://togithub.com/gradle/gradle/releases/tag/v5.5.1):
5.5.1

This bug-fix release contains three changes to Gradle 5.5:

- Combination of errorprone-gradle-plugin and options.fork = true causes
Java compilation to fail in Gradle 5.5
[#9897](https://togithub.com/gradle/gradle/issues/9897)
- Using dependency declaration `gradleKotlinDsl()` fails with 5.5
[#9919](https://togithub.com/gradle/gradle/issues/9919)
- Chain of transitives aligned by same platform can lead to broken
resolution
[#9882](https://togithub.com/gradle/gradle/issues/9882)

We recommend that you use Gradle 5.5.1 over 5.5.

#### Upgrade Instructions

Switch your build to use Gradle 5.5.1 by updating your wrapper
properties:

`./gradlew wrapper --gradle-version=5.5.1`
