Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.

Describe the solution you'd like
Add TypeScript build process to the project.

  • all existing source and tests files are converted to TS with all types left open (any)
  • tests continue to work
  • code is compiled in CI
  • library release process continues to generate a JS package
  • type declaration file from Add type declaration file #277 continues to be shipped with a released package
