In order to support variants, arbitrary things need to be on the semi-backgrounds of the sudoku (in front of borders, behind everything else)

I don't know how to deal with borders, but for the things in cells, it is technically possible using backgrounds and select opacities

If I do do this then extracting some kind of API would definitely be practically necessary

A more practical solution is to just put everything on top of the sudoku, but then the candidates would go under...
