Name for the "public IPFS DHT"

Per #470 , we're seeking a name for the "public IPFS DHT" /ipfs/kad/1.0.0.

Proposed name: Almanac

Reason it’s great:
The IPFS DHT is a list of information such as CID's and peerID's organised in a way permiting users to reach what they are seeking.
An almanac used to list all the past and future positions of stars, hour of sunrise, position of the moon, occurences of eclipse, etc. and was used by sailors to navigate.
I really like the idea of orientating yourself thanks to stars to reach your destination.
"Almanac" reminds both of the stars and planets, and about a dictionnary-like list where you select information relevant to you orientate, find your way and navigate.

I find the word very recognisable because is a rare word in English. Pronunciation is easy in any language because it uses only 1 voyel and, consonants among the most commons in languages around the world. Length is slightly long, maybe an alias "almc" can be used in the command line if needed. SEO-wise, it will be rare-enough for "IPFS Almanac" to yield the correct results.

once you agree on your dht format and the name i will start to create PR's with integrated dev environments based on vscode and the new web bundle format which is able to ship complet isolated Applications. So you can Play around with it as it will contain then VSCODE but the CODE-OSS version without microsoft stuff and a IPFS FileSystemProvider + WebRTC Support you will be happy with it.

on local instances you share a id as text nothing is needed to link a remote host.
on nat/networking you share a ICE server address and a ID again both text

your done all this is nodejs and browser compatible out of the box.

The goal here is to change the nature of the DHT, and to provide a name to the swarm of peers that are connected in the same network. The DHT isn't a transport, it is used as an overlay routing mechanism for peers and content in decentralized systems.

@guillaumemichel thats the wrong level of abstraction today the DHT is only a table that will store SDP data for datachannels no matter what the data or transport protocol is the so called Backbone Peer Protocols. The DHT is a way to agree on a network like when we in the Internet Exchange Backbone agree on a IP Subnet

but the new internet is not IP based so we stay with so called SessionID's every RTCPeerConnection is a own Router it then inits a datachannel for routing information to a secund peer then it will add additional data channels for connections its like the IPV6 Implementation if you studie it you will find out there is a lot of routing magic into it also the topic of anonymous connections and so on and so on i can write whole books about that topics.

Anyway keep it simple we do not need to transport networking knowleg here thats not the goal Simple listen view and take what you can use.

I have a IPFS Implementation that works without servers i am chromium engineer

the most simple way to get a working remote socket today that is using tcp tls encrypted at last is the IceProtocol i got successs with own implementations of the ICE Server i was able to transport raw TCP Connection ICE Candidates for datachannels. ICE supports TLS via a STUN/TURN extension that means more simplefied.

You can at last Route and Connect Raw TLS Sockets via the Text Based STUN TURN Protocols That is also the only Secure way to do it remote as you need a way to encrypt the connection. Enabling raw TCP Support will not happen outside of secure context. in secure context it is alreaedy shiped inside chromium but not triaged so no documentation.

If you do not want or can not use the new more secure context because it blows your mind this is a cheat

The requirements have changed in mid-March M111+. Now it needs:

I am the one with a web 4.0 prototype implementation on earth by the way including netwide linear memory grid computing in realtime i am principal engineer of project chromium virtual environments which targets to build a world wide super computer

and do not get me wrong i can implement a own DHT i only want to agree with you because your project got some level of adoption in the crypto currency web 3 world.

with my help you can get web 4 which by the way deprecates web3 and crypto complet by replacing it with routing information so like the edge network in the web 3.0 space you maybe know the edge coin . they also implemented routing and selling it as coin.

but all that is stuff for the next 5 years today we want to agree on the name IPFS for the DHT and throw away near 95% of the IPFS related code base and replace it with nativ functions that we got already shipped inside browsers.

for example to adjust your IPFS goals you got now Crypto.subtle === all encryption stuff nativ, OPFS navigator.storage.getDirectory() === The Origin Private FileSystem including high performance access to the nativ FileSystem via the Naiv FileSystem Access API.

and endless other stuff no need to replicate all that here only want to make 100% clear i know what i am doing.

and as sayed when you put a TLS Proxy in front of any service then your able to expose it via WEBRTC as RAW Socket already. WebRTC Datachannel => Routed via STUN/TURN => Output on target UDP or TCP Socket depending on stun turn reply (ICE PROTOCOL) => TLS Decrypt on proxy side => get raw socket data process it reply => TLS Proxy now encrypts again => your Inital WebRTC Datachannel now emits decrypted raw data again.

And ya if you wonder how to do a TLS proxy you should google for TLS cert reuse nodejs and then start putting certs into a array and call it a day.

📣 After several rounds of iterations on the naming front and as effort is ongoing to improve the DHT codebase to make it easier to use and build on, the PL EngRes IPFS Stewards team proposes that what has so far been called “the Public IPFS DHT” will become “Amino” henceforth.

As @dennis-tra mentions above, the amino acid is the building block for larger, stronger structures, which is what we believe will happen with this network 🚀
