Troubleshooting Jenkinsfile Runner

This section provides some tips and tricks about diagnosing Jenkinsfile Runner when it does not work as expected.

Logging

By default, Jenkinsfile Runner exposes only a limited subset of Jenkins system logs. Log entries get propagated to system out only when the severity is WARNING or higher. It might become a problem when troubleshooting advanced use-cases. For example, external agent connection issues will be commonly reported on the INFO level and hence not visible by default.

It is possible to override the logging configuration by specifying a java.util.logging.config.file system property. With this property it is possible to pass a custom configuration file for the Java Util Logging subsystem used in Jenkins. Please refer to the Java Util Logging documentation for more information about the configuration file and available options.

To setup custom logging:

  • When running Jenkinsfile Runner as a JAR file, pass a system property as a JVM argument

    • java -Djava.util.logging.config.file=${YOUR_LOG_CONFIG_PATH} -jar jenkinsfile-runner.jar …

  • When using the official Docker images, pass a JAVA_OPTS environment variable and file through the volume.

    • docker run --rm … -v ${YOUR_LOG_CONFIG_PATH}:/jenkinsfile-runner/logging.properties -e JAVA_OPTS='-Djava.util.logging.config.file=/jenkinsfile-runner/logging.properties' jenkins/jenkinsfile-runner

Debugging

As a last resort, you can debug Jenkinsfile Runner. See the Debugging Guide for more information.

Asking for help in the community

If you experience an issue and cannot troubleshoot it, you can raise it in the community channels. Please note that the Jenkins community and Jenkinsfile Runner maintainers provide no SLA.
