Is a smarter breadcrumbs component possible?

Currently, breadcrumbs are just links. Instead of this, can I make a smarter breadcrumbs component, that shows a menu instead?

Clicking on the parent of the current page should show me all children of the parent (i.e., all siblings of the current page). This would create a nice contextual navigation experience, that would even make the sidebar superfluous in most cases.
