useForm picking up fields trigger warning readonly

Recently I updated vee-validate and on the first field on the first form I get a warning

[Vue warn] Set operation on key "someFieldName" failed: target is readonly.

The form is not picked up by the devtools at all and the field is also not working. Is there anything past 4.6.6 to do to make the same work for the latest version?

do I always have to use useField or defineComponentBinds or such?

You don't have to, you can use setFieldValue. But if you are directly writing to values then that was not encouraged as it should've been treated as readonly.

currently my problem is that those fields do not show up with vee validate at all as it seems. I am not sure where the warning is thrown exactly since it says only vue runtime.
