It looks like your second code span does not end with a grave accent (U+0060, "backtick") but with an acute accent (U+00B4). It therefore is not recognized as a code span at all. The preview and the generated HTML look as expected if I enclose the code span in your example with grave accents. Did you perhaps forget to hold Shift while typing the closing accent (or whatever your keyboard layout requires to produce a grave accent)?
