I'm reluctant to use this package because it tells me to use this page to create a classic Application Insights workspace. The page has a big disclaimer at the top that this approach is stale and "not recommended". Would like to see how to do it in workspace-based Application Insights.

There are instructions to "migrate" but it's mental gymnastics to create one in classic just to migrate it to the new version immediately.

While I haven't test this, I am under the impression that you can just follow theses steps https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/azure-monitor/app/create-workspace-resource to create a workspace resource and use the instrumentation key found in the connection string on the created resource.
