I'm not certain this is something we should do yet, at least not in this way. The setEncoding here does not actually change the encoding on the socket itself, it changes how we read the data received from the socket. Specifically, using setEncoding() makes it so that the socket produces encoded strings rather than Buffer objects on the data event and read() functions. There may be side effects here that are unintended... such as continuing to use the socket object after an http upgrade to a different protocol.
