A number of tests have been failing internmittently
on the Rasberry PIs with timeouts since the update
to OpenSSL 3.0. Mark them as SLOW to see if that
removes the flakiness.

What's the timeout with SLOW? (maybe cc @richardlau)

I think SLOW = "automatically pass" but doesn't change the timeout.

I kinda suspect the issue isn't that the Pi devices are slow as much as that entropy gets exhausted. But I forget how/why I got that impression.

I'm busy with release work right now to check but I'm not sure that the test runner does anything with SLOW outside of debug test runs (or maybe there's a command line flag that needs to be passed to the runner). You'd have to look at the PR that added SLOW.

I think that means that if a test is marked SLOW to add allowing the passing case (otherwise you'd have to specify SLOW, PASS everywhere you'd use SLOW).

We keep running into timeouts, and unless we are testing performance, I don't know what the purpose of short timeouts is. I think we get a lot more false positives due to timeouts than we see actual issues that cause timeouts.

I guess SLOW is not what I was expecting. Looking at the code I can't find the part that would affect the timeout which is what I had expected.

Maybe I should update this instead:

TIMEOUT_SCALEFACTOR = {
    'arm'   : { 'debug' :  8, 'release' : 2 }, # The ARM buildbots are slow.
    'ia32'  : { 'debug' :  4, 'release' : 1 },
    'ppc'   : { 'debug' :  4, 'release' : 1 },
    's390'  : { 'debug' :  4, 'release' : 1 } }

I'll update the PR to do that.

I think the tests will also need to call something in common to get a scaled timeout value -- it's not automatic.

I think the tests will also need to call something in common to get a scaled timeout value -- it's not automatic.

From my look what I see is

  1. in test.py
 def RunCommand(self, command, env):
    full_command = self.context.processor(command)
    output = Execute(full_command,
                     self.context,
                     self.context.GetTimeout(self.mode, self.config.section),
                     env,
                     disable_core_files = self.disable_core_files)
    return TestOutput(self,
                      full_command,
                      output,
                      self.context.store_unexpected_output)

  def GetTimeout(self, mode, section=''):
    timeout = self.timeout * TIMEOUT_SCALEFACTOR[ARCH_GUESS or 'ia32'][mode]
    if section == 'pummel' or section == 'benchmark':
      timeout = timeout * 6
    return timeout

  1. The platformTimeout which can be called by the tests, but I don't see the crypto ones listed in the issue doing that.
function platformTimeout(ms) {
  const multipliers = typeof ms === 'bigint' ?
    { two: 2n, four: 4n, seven: 7n } : { two: 2, four: 4, seven: 7 };

  if (process.features.debug)
    ms = multipliers.two * ms;

  if (isAIX)
    return multipliers.two * ms; // Default localhost speed is slower on AIX

  if (process.arch !== 'arm')
    return ms;

  const armv = process.config.variables.arm_version;

  if (armv === '7')
    return multipliers.two * ms;  // ARMv7

  return ms; // ARMv8+
}

So in this case I think it is only the change in TIMEOUT_SCALEFACTOR that might help.

I kinda suspect the issue isn't that the Pi devices are slow as much as that entropy gets exhausted. But I forget how/why I got that impression.

I think the easiest way to figure that out is to extend the timeout and see if they go away or not.

I agree that we should have timeouts to prevent long-running CI jobs if we have a hang, but agree with @tniessen that making them too tight adds more problems than it solves.

Especially because our CI is very slow anyway. We don't gain much from short timeouts, we might as well make it a couple of minutes or so, depending on what it is right now.

I don't think this approach is going to help. Let's look at one of the tests that is timing out, test-crypto-binary-default.

Here it is on our slowest Raspberry Pi devices:

13:09:34 ok 149 parallel/test-crypto-binary-default
13:09:34   ---
13:09:34   duration_ms: 6.259

It passed in 6 seconds. Something else is going on that causes the Pi devices to lock up for minutes at a time. I don't know if it's something on the device unrelated to our tests, or if it's something in our code that results in an infinite loop, or if it's affecting crypto tests because they are running out of entropy for dozens of minutes at a time or what. But I do strongly suspect that extending the timeout won't solve anything but will increase our CI pain as it takes longer for these tests that are going to time out to actually time out.

If entropy is exhausted, is that something that would be logged somewhere on the system?

CI: https://ci.nodejs.org/job/node-test-pull-request/43104/

In this CI run, the times for tests on the Pi devices ranged from 1 second to 153 seconds. The current timeout (without this PR) is 240 seconds.

I'm going to re-run at least once, possibly a few times, to get a sense if this really fixes anything. Should probably re-run at least enough times until we see either that timeouts are still happening or that there is a test that passed that would have failed without this change.

Welp:

ok 233 parallel/test-crypto-binary-default
  ---
  duration_ms: 328.837
  ...

Guess that's proof that a longer timeout will in fact help.

Added the fast track label as I figure that if it helps, the sooner its landed the better and if in the end we still see failures it can easily be reverted.

Some crypto tests that are marked as SLOW/SKIP on ARM also sometimes fail on other platforms. This example on Windows was killed after 2 minutes. I don't suspect an actual problem there, and I am again wondering what the purpose of short timeouts is.
