npm version output does not seem to account for tag-version-prefix #21187

I'm opening this issue because:

  • npm is crashing.
  • npm is producing an incorrect install.
  • npm is doing something I don't understand.
  • npm is producing incorrect or undesirable behavior.
  • Other (see below for feature requests):

What's going wrong?

If I set the config tag-version-prefix to '', I can see that the git tag and commit message does not include the default v prefix. However, the output of the npm version command still has v.

Is this the desired behavior?
