New rotate action not actually rotating document?

Trying to use the newer rotate action for the first time and finding that the document is not being rotated at all. Looking in the logs I see the below information:

If I'm manually choosing to rotate a document, why should the confidence level come into play? Shouldn't that be set in such a way that it always rotates by the requested # of degrees?

It is rotating. The second log entry is regarding ocr (see ocrmypdf) which is re-run.

Perhaps you’re seeing cached thumbnails, but generally the rotate action isn’t known to have any major issues and does work

@shamoon I can share with you a "step recorder" html/mht file of what I'm seeing, but I don't want to share publicly.

Tough to give you a perfect answer because caching can be many layers, browser, edge etc. but we do take steps at the app/server level to clear the cached thumbnail. If you’re unsure if the pdf itself rotated id just check the original (which should essentially be replaced after rotating).

As for the rotating, similar to pretty much all actual pdf stuff, paperless just relies on another tool called pikepdf. there may be cases it doesn’t handle but I’d expect that to raise an error

Part of me is starting to wonder if I'm re-opening the document to quick. Is there something more to look for to know when rotation is completed? I'm assuming its [2024-05-03 04:09:47,671] [INFO] [paperless.parsing] convert exited. In your experience how quickly is the rotation able to be reflected in the UI?

Again, a little bit of variation depending, but the process is:

• Rotate -> original doc is rotated immediately
• Then, a new archive file is generated and queued for consumption. This part I suppose could take a bit depending on your system but in practice is just as quick as any consumption.

When you view a doc in the browser, depending on your settings youre usually viewing the archive version.

Yuck... it must be something with the browser cache. If I open the link to the document in a new private window right after the logs are done it seems to be correct.

Based on this, there probably isn't anything that can be done on the PNGX side.

Id love to improve the caching, we do pretty standard http stuff using technology like etag but browsers seem to just kind of... do their own thing.

Not something I have a ton of knowledge about but always welcome PRs =)

I wish I knew more to try a PR but browser caches are not an area I have any knowledge :-D

The best work around I found is to switch from 'list mode' to 'small thumbnails', and then do a bulk rotate. The thumbnails are still cached/wrong, but when you then open/edit the document, the rotation is correct.
