docker image update recognition release-x.x

Given this container on hub.docker.com which uses tags in the format of :release-x.x.

Should the recognition for updates work for this format as well or is not supposed to work?

You need a custom regex version scheme

There's no difference in this type of functionality between GitHub and Gitlab or app and self hosted. The difference must be coming from your config somehow.

Without docker.io as part of the image it works:

You need to adjust the packageNames values in your packageRules
