Vuepress 2.x is in RC phase and it has been like it for quite some time, from time to time when we bumped the plugin versions, we crashed the site. (not good). And recently, there is a new vitepress released, and the vue core team would focus on it rather than vuepress 2, so it is better to migrate off vuepress into vitepress soon or later.
There is some community post highlighting the differences between the two as well. (VuePress 2 vs VitePress)
