Proposed solution: https://www.elastic.co (logstash + elasticsearch + kibana).

Logs to collect and process:

  • nginx
  • fastly

Love this idea, showing metrics and stuff about popular operating systems, ruby versions, etc is great.

I've got some ops experience with elasticsearch and work with a guy who managed multi-terabyte/day logstash environments, so this doesn't sound too hard if we want to go that route.

If we can make it work though, I'd recommend finding a hosted log service and asking for an open source sponsorship/discount thingy in exchange for an account on their service.

I will try to figure out amount of data we need to process and then talk to elastic.co to see if they interested in sponsoring.

Is there a more lightweight alternative to ELK in 2020? Managing ELK looks like a monstrous task.
