It seems that when I ssh into a server the status bar does not recognize this.

I'm not sure I understand? In the readme, it shows very clearly (via a gif) that when you ssh in it turns off the top bar (f12) and then a bottom bar appears

After you ssh into your server, are you starting a remote tmux session?
