We're migrating some old repositories that had been using a develop branch, and semantic-release@beta failed out of the box because we didn't have a master branch.

This PR adds a bit more detail to the error message and documentation to help the next person in my shoes.

Hm, this PR is showing as red in GitHub, but there's no failure listed in Travis. I'd like to fix the build but I'm not sure what's wrong.

I restarted the build, it failed at first but it seems to have been a glitch. All good ;)
