Is the apiGateway.stage option work supposed to work on Websockets?

I want to set the stage of our deployed websockets to wss the reason for this is we're proxying through Cloudfront and the no matter if we're on production or staging the frontend needs to connect on the path wss. Because of how Cloudfront origins and behaviours work that means the stage of the websocket has to be wss.

I tried setting the provider.apiGateway.stage option in the serverless config. But it seems to have no affect and is still deployed on either dev or prod. Is this meant to work? If not, is there a way to get the result I need?

Currently after deployment I have to go into the AWS console and deploy the wss stage manually, which is not ideal.
