AFAIK the node backend is needed for the IRC connection. You'd have to
implement a server client setup and provide the server backend.

To be honest in my opinion this should be a whole new app and codebase. But
of course copying code from slate ist perfectly fine.

Yea this issue isn't about replacing node it's just about using duo instead of component for pulling in packages
