Maintaining open source projects is hard. Don't get me wrong. It's fun and rewarding, especially when you first publish a new project. But sustaining the effort and interest needed to support a project for years as the ecosystem around it evolves and changes, as the community grows and makes an increasing number of demands... it takes some dedication.

Fortunately it can also be very rewarding work. Me, personally? I take a great deal of pride in knowing I have code running everywhere. The npm modules I maintain are downloaded billions of times per year. And that... that's pretty damn cool. But that is also a rather abstract notion. Downloads don't tell me what my code is being used for, or by whom, or how anyone feels about it.
