In 2005, we (Zac Cohan & Nik Youdale) built a new kind of calculator interface called Soulver.

Over the next ~20 years we continually made Soulver more useful.

Some of the more important ideas we added inclulde:

  • letting you use words alongside numbers (for added context)
  • natural language functions (to make working through problems easier)
  • variables & syntax coloring (borrowed from programming languages)
  • line references (borrowed from spreadsheets)

Soulver's UI inspired many other products on all major platforms, including Xcode's Swift Playground feature.

In 2024, and we still believe there are innovations to be "discovered" on the journey to finding the notepad calculator's quintessential form.

If you've found Soulver (or its clones) indispensable, consider supporting our explorations. By sponsoring us, you are directly contributing to the discovery and development of never-before-seen features in the genre of notepad calculators.
