I create open source software (OSS) either because there aren't any other solutions out there or because these existing solutions are either unaffordable and/or unreasonably (or strategically) constrained.

Creating and contributing to OSS is - in simple terms - a way of creating a better world.

OSS I clearly consider cultural heritage.

I furthermore consider it a clear social and political problem that official and unofficial foundations and institutions (in Switzerland) - or rather the general public - does not have any awareness about the cost and impact of OSS on society and does not support independent OSS in any way but rather forces well-educated engineers into the closed-loop market logic which unnecessarily destroys so many different types of resources for no actual (social) gain.

For me OSS primarily is a side-product to solve circumstancial problems in personal projects and it honestly is not my desire to spend more time on it than necessary (although I'm rather bad at constraining myself to do only what I personally need..).

In this sense, any support is appreciated as a sign of gratitude and support for the general effort behind OSS - I unconditionally do what I do and it is rather unlikely I will be influenced in what I do. Just as I hope for there to be unconditional sponsors who have the awareness of what OSS means.

Irrelevant to OSS questions at hand, but as I am involved in the arts and (socio-)culture where unpaid work is quite similarly a given any sponsorship would also (or maybe foremost) support these activities.

This symbolic sponsorship means that you express your support of OSS.

As an idea, you might also decide to write a letter to any official or unofficial foundation supporting projects of public interest/benefit (the classics would be arts, events, and socio-culture) and to suggest to them to include OSS projects as part of their supported project types.

Make sure to point out, that today's (IT) infrastructure (or even world!) would not exist without OSS which should be considered cultural heritage.

Thereby you would raise awareness and might create a positive change for local and/or regional contributors of OSS.

I am rather speechless at the unexpected generosity but very well know to appreciate the sponsored amount.

It's better to have a direct chat, really.
